The Earth's oceans are absorbing record-breaking amounts of heat for the ninth consecutive year, a phenomenon that could be likened to the energy released by 365 million Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs. This alarming trend, as reported by 55 scientists in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, is exacerbating extreme weather, rising sea levels, and the destabilization of marine ecosystems. The primary culprit, they assert, is the relentless rise in greenhouse gas emissions.

The impact of marine warming is already being felt globally, with stronger storms and more severe flooding devastating communities. The researchers highlight the deadly events of 2025, including unprecedented monsoon rains in Southeast Asia and flash floods in Central Texas, which claimed numerous lives, including young summer campers and counselors.

The authors emphasize that the long-term outlook is dire, with global ocean heat content expected to continue breaking records until net-zero greenhouse gas emissions are achieved. This is because the oceans act as the Earth's primary thermal energy sink, absorbing 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The thermal state of the ocean, therefore, plays a crucial role in regulating global and regional climate impacts.

To calculate the heat absorbed in 2025, the scientists measured temperature fluctuations in the upper 6,500 feet of the global ocean, finding that ocean heat content was 23 zettajoules higher than at the end of 2024. This made 2025 the hottest year on record in terms of Ocean Heat Content (OHC).

Last year, approximately 14% of the global ocean area reached its warmest state ever recorded, particularly in the Southern Ocean, tropical and South Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and North Indian Ocean. About one-third of the global ocean area ranked among its top three hottest years, and more than half among its five hottest. This underscores the pervasive and accumulated nature of ocean heat gain.

The consequences of this extra thermal energy are far-reaching. It supercharges storms, accelerates the rapid melting of glaciers and sea ice, and poses a deadly threat to coral reefs. In 2025, Arctic sea ice extent reached its lowest annual maximum since satellite observation began, while Antarctic sea ice extent fell to its third-lowest annual maximum. Both Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets reached record-low mass levels, with studies suggesting that portions of them have crossed critical climate tipping points, contributing to long-term global sea-level rise.

Ocean warming also leads to coral bleaching, as seawater temperatures exceed the thermal tolerance threshold of these fragile organisms, causing them to expel symbiotic algae. The world is currently experiencing its fourth global coral bleaching event, with bleaching-level heat stress impacting approximately 84% of the world's coral reef area since January 2023. Mass coral bleaching has been documented in at least 83 countries and territories.

The scientists predict that this nine-year streak of record-breaking marine warming will persist until the world achieves net-zero carbon emissions. However, rapid emissions reductions can still limit future impacts. To better understand and prepare for these impacts, the authors stress the importance of strengthening ocean monitoring and uncovering the mechanisms behind ocean heat redistribution, which will enable communities worldwide to adapt to the new climate reality and build resilience.
