Laundry: A Symbol of Resilience and Community
In the bustling city of Siem Reap, amidst the iconic temples and thriving tourism, there's a hidden story that unfolds daily. It's a tale of hard work, resilience, and the beauty found in the mundane. Filipino photographer Macy Castañeda Lee has captured this narrative, showcasing the unseen side of Cambodian life.
The Laundry Landscape of Siem Reap
Castañeda Lee stumbled upon a vibrant laundry scene during a motorbike ride along the Siem Reap River. "Laundry was everywhere," she recalls, describing the visual impact as striking. With camera in hand, she began documenting the diverse loads, soon realizing the deeper significance of laundry to the local community.
Laundry as a Symbol
For Cambodian and Khmer people, laundry is more than just a chore. It's a symbol of their economic and health standards. It represents the daily grind, the hard work, and the resilience of a community that relies on tourism for its livelihood. But here's where it gets controversial: is this a sustainable model, or does it exploit the very people it aims to support?
Invisible Workers, Visible Impact
Castañeda Lee's photo series sheds light on the invisible workers behind Cambodian tourism. These are the individuals who spend hours each day washing the laundry of tourists, contributing to the rural economy. A small load of laundry fetches a fee of 4,000 riel, roughly one U.S. dollar, providing a much-needed supplement to local incomes.
A Double Benefit
Meet Sothea and Bong Chea, two Khmer brothers who live halfway between the city center and Tonlé Sap lake. For them, laundry offers a two-fold benefit. The hanging laundry acts as a makeshift wall, keeping bugs at bay during the night. It also provides a small income when they wash their neighbors' clothes for a fee. Their home, made of scrap fabric and found objects, is a testament to their resourcefulness.
A Community Affair
Exploring the communities along the Siem Reap River, Castañeda Lee noticed how laundry is a family affair. Children help their families, scrubbing clothes in round basins. Many families juggle multiple businesses, like Vonn Da Li Na and his wife, who run the P Salon & Laundry. They spend hours doing laundry for their business on top of their personal laundry. "It is our work, along with the salon, so we just try to have fun with it," Vonn shared.
Working with What You Have
Hau N Me Tha Na, a mother of three, owns a laundry business near Coconut Shell Coffee House. She makes use of natural resources, hanging laundry on sticks and using the Siem Reap River for her business. The river is a common water source for many laundry businesses, but Castañeda Lee notes the potential sanitation concerns. Honme Thana, another laundry business owner, relies on the river as her water source due to limited access in her community. "She's learning how to work with nature," Castañeda Lee explains.
Time and Patience
Laundry is a visual staple in rural Siem Reap communities, often hung in open spaces with lots of light. Castañeda Lee was drawn to the serene nature of the process. "These people weren't on their phones while waiting for the laundry," she observes. "Sometimes they would just sit and be still." This stillness may reflect the Buddhist beliefs prevalent in Cambodia, emphasizing meditation and a calm mindset. "They're in no rush; that's really changed my perspective," Castañeda Lee adds.
A Lasting Legacy
Laundry, Castañeda Lee believes, will always be a part of Siem Reap's landscape. "It'll evolve throughout the years," she says, but the hands of the community that wash it will always be reflected. The photographer hopes to return for a second part of this series, continuing to document this unique aspect of Cambodian life.
