Trump's Iran Conflict: Americans Want Clarity on Goals and Congress Approval (2026)

Most Americans believe the Trump administration has failed to articulate its objectives in the Iran conflict, according to a CBS News poll. This lack of clarity is closely tied to public support for the administration's actions. The longer the conflict is perceived to last, the more Americans disapprove. Half of the country anticipates the conflict to persist for months or even years. When the administration's explanation is deemed insufficient, people tend to believe the conflict will be prolonged or uncertain in duration. Moreover, a significant portion of Americans currently views the military action as a threat to U.S. safety rather than a safeguard. Despite this, Americans hold diverse opinions regarding the administration's goals, with many believing there are multiple objectives. Those who support the administration's actions often cite stopping nuclear weapons, preventing terrorism, or aiding the Iranian people as key goals. However, a more cynical perspective suggests that the administration's actions are driven by political gain in the U.S. Overall, the majority of Americans disapprove of the administration's handling of the Iran conflict. Yet, the president's Republican and MAGA supporters remain steadfast in their support, believing the action enhances U.S. safety. This survey, conducted by CBS News/YouGov, involved recontacting 1,399 U.S. adults who were initially interviewed for a poll last week, before the airstrikes began. Interestingly, a slightly higher proportion of people approved of military action to prevent nuclear weapons last week compared to the current approval rate for the broader action. This shift is attributed to those who have since disapproved, citing the administration's lack of goal explanation and uncertainty about the conflict's duration. Furthermore, two-thirds of the surveyed population believes the administration should seek Congress's approval for further military action, a view that aligns with the stance taken during the U.S. military action in Venezuela. The survey's margin of error is ± 3.2 points.
